Basel, with over 200,000 inhabitants, is the third largest city in Switzerland (after Zurich and Geneva). What's nice is the feeling of being in a big city and small town at the same time. Built along the banks of the Rhine River, the Altstadt (the old part of the city) is largely intact and contains blocks and blocks of historical homes and buildings. What I find truly amazing is tour bus operators seem to have not discovered this 2,000 year old beautiful city. Nary a tour bus was spotted, which for the record are more likely then not filled with Americans, Japanese or Germans.
